Americans beat Canada, but both will play for gold

The Americans started in the best possible way with Impagliazzo scoring in the 4th minute. Despite O’Connor adding a second goal, it was clear that Canada wouldn’t give up easily. Schireau got the goal to get them on the scoreboard. The Americans got another goal at the beginning of the third period by Battista, but the Canadians answered quickly with a goal on a long shot by Greene. They then took advantage of the momentum and within a minute the score was tied, thanks to Mackie’s equalizer which sent the game to overtime. After a scoreless extra period, the game was decided in a penalty shootout, with Warner-Senee netting the game-winning shot. Nonetheless, the one point earned is enough to send Canada to the gold medal game, having won the head-to-head tiebreaker with Slovakia.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

John Silcox (CAN): “It was a hard-fought game, obviously every time we play each other, it is a hard-fought game. USA was very disciplined and started well, but I am really proud of my boys to battle back. We have a video to watch, get some rest and get ready for tomorrow.”

Eddie Costa (USA): “It was a big game. We came in and rolled our lines, wanted to get everybody working. The game meant something to us and we gave it our all. Canada is a great team, we’re playing them again tomorrow, so to us, it’ll be like starting the game with the score 3:3. We’ve worked hard, this group has been together for about five years, and tomorrow it’s our time to get the chance to win the gold medal.”
