Switzerland comfortably beats GB in World Juniors opening game

Great Britain and Switzerland U18 teams met in one of the two opening games of the 2024 World Juniors Championship. The Brits grabbed the lead early through Aaron Winstanley's fourth-minute power-play goal. However, they only enjoyed the lead for less than three minutes, when Wiktor Lasek equalized. Great Britain got another power play shortly after, but Holderegger Perks sprinted across the rink and beat Coldwell with a successful backhand deke. In the second period, and on another man advantage, Switzerland took a two-goal lead thanks to Klaus. Two quick goals at the beginning of the third period scored by Lasek and Jud assured the Swiss victory with the score stopping at 8-2.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

Benny Tring (GBR): "It was a good game for the most of the first period. We took the lead quickly and held onto it for quite a while. But the Swiss were just quick, they took their chances and made most of the opportunities we presented them with. And then penalties killed us towards the end. Every time we sat in the penalty box, it took the legs away from the players. The Swiss just took the chances and won the game."

Steiger Bastian (SUI): "We didn't start the game well, but we answered correctly. The first break helped us when we discussed in the locker room how we wanted to play. We'll see how it goes for us moving forward."
