Slovakia U18 narrowly loses to USA in shootout

The Slovak U18 team started the tournament against the same opponent as their younger counterparts – the USA. In the first period, the Americans had more of the game, but the game gradually leveled off and the score stayed 0-0 until the intermission. In the second period, the Americans took the lead thanks to Battista. They also had several opportunities to increase the lead shortly after, however, they were unable to capitalize. The Slovaks were active in the third period and were rewarded with an equalizing goal five minutes before the final horn, sending the game into overtime. No goal was scored in the extra five minutes, so the shootout had to decide the winner of this tightly-fought game. Only one shooter was successful, American defenseman Warner-Senee, securing two points for the US team.

COACHES´ REACTIONS

Ľubomír Líška (SVK): "The start was not ideal, USA were better in the opening shifts. It took a few minutes before we got into the game. The game then became even, it's a shame about our missed chances. However, I have to admit that I have never seen the USA play as well as they did in this tournament. But I'm sure that we can play better and we want to show it in the next match."

Eddie Costa (USA): "I think we started out really great, then we tailed off a little bit. We have to keep the momentum going for three periods and we can’t let up. We got to be better in the defensive zone and we’re going to talk about it."
