Basilio: Best feeling I’ve ever had

The USA won the bronze medal in the U16 World Championship after beating Czechia Red 3-1. One of their best players in the tournament was Ian Basilio, who had 12 points in 6 games (5 goals + 7 assists). He continued to produce in the bronze-medal game, scoring a goal to tie the game and then assisting on Mac Weldon's insurance marker.

How did you approach the game for bronze against Czechia Red?
We took it as another opportunity. We lost the game against Czech White yesterday, so we knew what we had to do. We were prepared to finish the job and we wanted to come home with this bronze medal.

You scored your team's first goal to tie the game. How important was that?
I think it was pretty important. We were playing well, but we just needed that one little spark to get us through. I just did my best to get it done and score.

You had also assisted on the 3-1 goal with less than two minutes to play. Did you feel at that point the game was over?
As soon as we scored that goal, I knew we would win it. At that point, we had game fully under control and we just needed to play smart defense in the little time that was left. I'm glad that we managed to finish the game in that fashion.

You have a medal hanging around your neck. How does it feel?
Really amazing, words can’t describe it. I really, really love this. Best feeling I've ever had.

Do you see it as a consolation or achievement playing for bronze?
A medal is a medal. Perhaps bronze is better than silver, as you get to leave the tournament with a win. Still, we are top-three in the world. I’ll take that all day.
